    Sangaree:
First off, let me say how much I appreciate the 3-D Film Archives for the restorations they do. Top notch super difficult work. My hat is off to you. Keep it up! I really appreciate that you included footage of the before and after of the film.

Now, as for this movie, not much of a fan. I do love old movies but some (many) are so cringeworthy when it comes to women…and this one is super cringeworthy. Let me state for the record, we do not fall in love with abusive men that are the “good guys”. The movie would have played much better without him being forceful. The storyline was quite predictable.

The 3D was ever present. Lots of depth in some scenes and then there were scenes where they looked like cardboard cutouts. The latter’s scenes tended to use camera blur on the background. I’m assuming it was shot that way and the actors were in the studio, not outdoors as the scene suggested.

There was a barroom brawl to give you a couple of pop outs, and one other scene although I can’t remember what it was. These did not work for me. I saw more of a blur than an item being hurled to the side of me. I feel this happens too often in movies for my taste. One of the barrels did come to my face, but it was quick and blurry.

The coloring of the movie was the typical Technicolor of the time. Well restored color. 🙂 I am very thankful for that.

Does this movie deserve a slot in your shelf? Well, that depends. Are you someone that has to get every well done 3D movie? Then yes. If you buy movies to enjoy the story? Then no. Although purchasing it does help 3-D Film Archives to keep doing what they do well. And I am a fan of restoring all the old movies, whether they are 3D or not.

    Jivaro:
I wasn’t expecting much so I was pleasantly surprised that I thought this one was good. Good, not great. No women falling for men that manhandle them. Also, after seeing Sangaree right before watching this one, it was a huge improvement.

The storyline was entertaining. Of course there was some looking down on women, this is a product of that time period, but at least most of the characters were decent. The couple that were not, was due to that being part of the storyline.

It was fun seeing Brian Keith in this movie. And at least they gave him a bare chested scene. It was overly repetitive of them having Fernandos Lamas shirtless or with an open shirt.

The 3D had nice depth for most of the movie. I liked being able to see people in the background through the windows of the main scene in the beginning of the movie. There were some scenes where there was a flat backdrop. I didn’t understand why they threw in the 2D badly colored jungle animals though. Yeah, they were trying to make the audience feel that the jungle is a dangerous place to be.

There were some pop outs spaced through the movie. Of course there was a fight scene. I am so glad the industry got so much better at fight scenes. I can’t help but giggle at them when I’m watching old movies.

The coloring is nice with Technicolor which is optimal for beautiful redheaded ladies. Something that I saw quite a bit of in this movie that I didn’t see in the other two I have, was many of the fade in and outs weren’t fully restored. The color was so off on those. I’m assuming these are really hard to do?

Thankfully this one has a commentary track. There is also an extra titled “A Shot by Shot Stereoscopic Analysis” which I’m sure a few of you will love. It gives all the geeky stats on how the scene was shot in 3D since this movie used variable distances.

    Those Redheads from Seattle:
If you don’t like old musicals, this movie is not for you. I happen to like this type, so for me it was fun.

This is in Technicolor. This was Paramount’s first film in non-anamorphic widescreen and 3 channel sound. It was also the first 3D musical.

The 3 channel sound track was lost and they had to recreate it. I did not know this when I was watching the movie, so I was surprised when I could definitely hear things coming out of the different speakers. It was done well. They tried to do it like it would have been done back then and not like it would be done today. The original mono track is also on here if you prefer to hear it that way.

The storyline is typical of the day. Girls, don’t show your ankles! The 3D was great. Lots of depth and pop outs…hands and legs intentionally go to the camera while dancing, and even some beer going into your face.

Best part is there was a lot of huskies! Worst part….the godawful fight between two men. I laugh-scoffed.
